The mixed traction weekend early in the season was a bit of a venture but really did pay off perhaps not completely weather-wise however the rain managed to stay away just slightly chilly!

On the Saturday train loadings were good and all trains ran to the timetable with only Ullr deciding to cause an issue when it failed before its first path with a battery issue; this was swiftly resolved converting it back to hand crank allowing the locomotive to complete its paths for the rest of the day. One seven header was ran as the weather closed in and made track conditions too risky to try and run the half past four service.

The Sunday was a much better day weather-wise with more sunshine albeit with a foggy start. After team discussion for the day and Ullr was started (quite a lengthy process on a cold morning!) the train services started, kicking off with Greenbat on the first run swiftly followed by ZM32 on the goods. Today both seven headers ran with great enthusiasm and enjoyment from the team of drivers piloting these two services.

Thanks has to go to all the staff who made the weekend happen, from planners to drivers and guards to shunters! Well done to everyone!

With this in mind the Traction Department had a lot planned for today however Ullr had other ideas! On routine inspection it was discovered that one of the bearings in the axle had collapsed which rendered the locomotive out of action; it was swiftly moved to the workshop where it was lifted and the axle box removed from the axle. On further inspection of the bearing on the other side it was thought that bearing may be similar to that used on 1881, the locomotive sat on the plinth by the station area. After removing that bearing it was exactly the same, a relief for the team, it was cleaned out, examined and then greased and fitted. Thankfully this allows the locomotive to run next weekend at the traction gala.

Inside the new building trim was being fitted to the panelling recently installed over Easter to finish off the joins between the panels. Also the timber for the workbench was cut and further fitted together allowing for the sturdy bench to be used once the top has been delivered to site.

Alongside all of this the service train was operating with healthy passenger numbers enjoying the warmth of the sunshine!
Our first event over with for the year which marked our start of the 2016 operational season. This kicked off with normal services handled by our resident stalwarts ZM32, Greenbat, Peggy and Peter.

In the new building over the weekend the interior was coming on really well, it was decided to install panelling in order to allow for better insulation and also something to mount socket banks and racking to. This is now complete and also painted meaning that further work on the electrics of the building which includes the lights can be completed.

In the Traction and Rolling Stock Department Ullr was in for painting of the buffer beams and also the manufacturing and fitting of a battery box in the cab to stop water ingress onto the tops of the batteries which could cause major damage to them. Hudson was also brought down for pre-gala maintenance which included adjusting the fuel mixture to allow it to run smoother and also maintain a tick over speed easily.

Only one week till our gala!

The Permanent Way Team were working on the section of line between Killers Dale Halt and Recreation Ground Station removing a lean on a section of track which had sunk over the course of last season. With this complete they then moved on to packing sleepers on the section to remove the severity of some dipped joints.

In the Motive Power Department Hibberd 4008 had its new air system installed which will allow for through train piping which will be invaluable at the Mixed Traction Gala in Spring and also August. Other tasks completed on the locomotive was the painting of the buffer beams on both ends; these were put into undercoat prior to a top coat being applied. Peter had its battery box placed back on again after new battery box mounting rubbers were applied. Manrider 103 was returned to the Carriage and Wagon Shed now that a locomotive was available to shunt it with.

A test train was run with Manrider 103 to test the new loop form. This was passed as being fit which means that we can move forward to Easter.

In the new building at Steeplehouse new 110V sockets were installed and wiring run to accommodate these. Also the interior panelling which was cut last week was painted, this only leaves the other side to be painted before they can be fitted to the sides of the building.

Easter is closing in!

On a Permanent Way front as the new embankment has been compacted it has allowed for more panels of track have been laid; three extra panels have been laid to allow for wagon stock to be traversed to the end to dump spoil and ballast. Finishing ballasting of the Lawson's Loop was also completed on this day.

On a Traction and Rolling Stock front Peter was next on the examination list and so was shunted into the workshop and the battery box removed using the crane. Over in the Engine House Manrider 103 was being signed off as fit for traffic as the exam had been completed on that vehicle. Also in the Engine House was Hibberd 4008 which has had its new brake bar fitted and commissioning completed as being signed off as fit for traffic once again; a mere couple of months after first going in for work to be completed.

Work inside the new shed at Steeplehouse has carried on a pace with the electrics nearly finished and ready for certification, the interior panelling was being cut and joined ready for painting before being fitted to the lower partition of the walls.

That's all for now!
A general tidy up of Dark Lane area and a reshuffle of stock in the shed to allow the annual checks to commence.

The permanent Way Team have completed the second side of Lawson's Loop and reconnected the points and levers it just remains to finally pack and adjust before passenger running.

Annual inspections have been done on ZM with no issues found thankfully and a successful run over the mainline completed. Greenbat had it's battery box removed using the new crane facility which cut the time to approximately 5 minutes and all a lot less effort required. Again no issues found and passed ready for traffic. Work on 'Ullr' 4008 is proceeding with the construction and fitting of a new brake rod and brackets as well as some repainting of the buffer beams. A new tool box has also been fitted in the driver compartment. Manrider 103 has been brought into the engine shed and raised up to allow better access ready for it's pre running checks.

Work has begun on constructing a rear canopy to the engine shed over the back apron using steelwork salvaged from the old wagon bodies with Keith in charge of the master plan.

Much activity is being concentrated on our new building at present with the electrical connection completed from the existing supply allowing the roller door to be commissioned. Work fitting the trunking to take the internal wiring has been completed and delivery of the timber for the internal panelling and vice bench ready for cutting.

Lastly despite it being our closed season on Valentines Day several trains did run as there were customers who had made a special journey to see us although only up as far as Recreation Ground Bridge due to Lawson's Loop being unavailable. It's only a few weeks now until the new season starts over the Easter weekend and we hope to see many of you there weather permitting!

Due to the wet weather on the 31st the team concentrated their efforts on tidying up the workshop in order to allow work to progress quicker and also the engine house was given a spring clean.

The Permanent Way Department has been busily working on Lawson's Loop which now has on line joined up meaning that there is through access to Sandy Lane, now they turn their attention to joining up the point levers and then installing the other side of the loop in time for Easter!

In the Motive Power section the new tie bar for the brake rigging on Hibberd 4008 is progressing well, this is to replace the existing bar which isn't sturdy enough for the task its asked to do. Elsewhere on the locomotive the brakes were correctly setup to match the wheel sets which appeared incorrect when they were completed the first time. ZM32 was also run up last Sunday for a quick running check and also to move it across to the next line to allow the examination to start.

That's all for now!

Work on Lawson's Loop was put on hold as a number of Permanent Way members was quite low therefore efforts were turned to working on the head shunt next to the new building at Steeplehouse. This needed extending of which has been completed now only requires the buffer stop adding at the end to stop stock proceeding further than the end of the tracks.

Over in the Engine House a small team came to work on Hibberd 4008 but before this work commenced they put together one of the new cabinets for the new building with varying degrees of success! When they finally got to the locomotive the front brake bar was removed and bar adjusted to allow the brake blocks to sit on the wheels better, this successfully completed the same needs to be repeated on the rear brake bar. Its safe to say the brakes are much more efficient now.

Others on site included the vegetation clearance team who worked at the top end of the line keeping the line clear of leaves otherwise they tend to cause difficulty with track adhesion on the steep incline above Dark Lane Quarry.

On this day we were battling the elements with a dusting of snow, nevertheless we battled through completing some shunting manoeuvres in Dark Lane Quarry. Hibberd 4008 blazed a trail to allow other locomotives to follow, before commencing the shunting operations which allow us to release some of the wagon stock needed for further extension of the line.

As most of the locomotives were out of the Engine House the team also decided to have a good tidy up which the Engine House looks much better for.
SGLRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11967068980383930971noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8612002945797817705.post-79168079230612069532016-01-11T17:47:00.003+00:002016-01-11T17:47:52.316+00:00Progress Report - Sunday 10th January This week the Motive Power Team and Permanent Way Team were both working in their respective areas.

Back again after last weeks successes the team working on Hibberd 4008 having sourced the leaks and dealt with them started to reassemble the locomotive back into working order once again, this started with the basics re-fitting the radiator for the coolant and fuel tank for the fuel the engine needs. With these both on it was a case of bleeding both systems and after final checks were done turning the key! We must stress that at Steeple Grange with the absence of an extractor fan diesel engines arent to be started in the shed however the team used ingenuity and with the absence of a locomotive to move 4008 out of the shed meant the exhaust would need to be extended to the outside which was completed using a rather large plastic waster pipe!

One of the tasks for the Permanent Way team in our short window of on track maintenance is the relaying of Lawson's Loop, which would see the removal of the West Y-Point in order for it to be replaced with a right hand turnout which would be of a lesser radius turn than the existing point meaning that it would give for a smoother ride through the loop. Today the team dealt with connecting up the East point for the loop before relaying the track and joining up with the other point ready to go in.

On a side from this another member of the team was offering trips from Steeplehouse Station to Recreation Ground Station in return for donations which went down very well with the general public who all left with large smiles!

As the only ones on site the opportunity was seized to lift the locomotive and change the front suspension springs of which were past their best and caused it to lean forward meaning it was quite close to the railhead itself. With the new springs in place it has levelled the locomotive completely; a massive relief. With the majority of the front end of the locomotive in bits trying to source a leak on the front of the engine other diesel pipes were also given a good going over and tightening after the season and being a newly restored locomotive before a full running season this year.

It is hoped to use the locomotive on demonstration freight trains on marked days, the two mixed traction events on the 9/10 April and also on the 27/28/29 of August and also on selected dates throughout the summer on passenger trains with our new compressor wagon.
Greenbat and Manrider 103 handled the services to Middleton up the mainline and re-launched Peggy operated on the smaller branch line down into Steeplehouse Quarry.

The Motive Power Department has also had great successes over the weekend, the first being the trial and successful return to working order of ZM32, which has had an oil change in readiness for the summer operating season. Attentions then turned to Manrider 104, which has languished in the Carriage and Wagon Shed all winter, finally breaking away to have its pre-season examination in readiness for operations. It passed successfully and was taken out on a test run coupled with ZM32 as this is its designated partner.

The major success was with Hibberd 4008, the locomotive has had various successes and stoppers with regard to its brake rigging in the last couple of weeks, but finally the brake rigging was fitted and trialled, adjusted and then trialled again. Late on Monday the locomotive left the workshops at Steeplehouse on a solo run up the line, the first time it has moved under its own power in preservation, a major achievement for the team!

A successful weekend all round!
In fact its just next week, will you be joining us?

Last Thursday concentrations turned to the continuation of the re-painting of Greenbat, as the paintwork after major overhaul hasn't faired so well, currently the locomotive sports a grey primer livery, and will do until after Easter where the top coat of green can be applied. Other attentions were on the new compressor wagon, which will provide air to our Manrider stock and air tools for permanent way, the vehicle has had the air compressor fitted to the chassis with fittings currently on order ready to turn the vehicle into a useful edition to the fleet, then finally a body will be constructed for the wagon.

Sunday saw a rather wash out day as the clocks went forward ironically to British Summertime. The Motive Power Team carried out remedial shunting movements in preparation for Easter, first releasing Manrider 104 and Manrider 103 which will both most likely called into service at some point in the coming weeks, after re-shuffling our wagon stock currently re-siding in the Carriage and Wagon Shed. In the afternoon as the weather cleared the opportunity was grasped to take Greenbat and Manrider 103 out on test before next weekend and we are safe to say that tests proved successful.

The Passenger Department also dealt with the transport of the display stands needed for the merchandise over the Easter Weekend, these will be put together next weekend and re-stocked ready.

The days are counting down very quickly now into the last week!

The Motive Power Department have been under the gun for the last month busily trying to return Greenbat back into service, rigorously testing ZM32 to make sure it is perfect for the operational season, getting L16 Peggy and Peter checked over. Alongside this Lizzie has had its brakes returned and completely restored back to operational services with tests undertaken. Hibberd 4008 is slowly having the brake rigging fitted, adjusted and tried, hopefully this will be in service in the not so distant future.

More preparations for Easter will continue this weekend and into next week!
Although news has been flowing slowly work definitely hasn't, with much to report in the Motive Power Department section and Rolling Stock Section.

In the Motive Power Department we have seen the rise of one locomotive from the depths, with two more following in close pursuit. "HORWICH" ZM32 threw a major challenge at us at Christmas just after the Santa Specials whereby Forward or Reverse drive wasn't able to be selected, deeming the locomotive out of service with an unknown return to service date. Within the first couple of weeks the problem was sourced and over the last couple of months a solution as to how the problem was to be dealt with was weighed up, finally last week after many different new parts being manufactured the locomotive moved under its own power for the first time. Battery electric locomotive "GREENBAT" had its running gear returned as well last week which had been away in Chesterfield at Dorlec for motor cleaning, now back on its wheels all that remains to get the locomotive wired back up again and the battery box returned to the locomotive. The last locomotive which has come on in leaps and bounds over the last couple of weeks is Hibberd 4008 "ULLR", which currently is awaiting its new brake rigging to be manufactured, this all be and well should be fitted next weekend and the locomotive run on its own for the first time in 42 years. Bumbling along in the background is Lister Hybrid "LIZZIE" which is currently having its brake rigging and blocks seen to, new ones recently cast with only the hanger bars awaiting manufacture before it can all go back together and form one of the operational fleet again.

In the rolling stock corner one of the large 16 seat passenger carrying vehicles "MANRIDER 103" had its examination ready for the running season, "MANRIDER 104" remains to have its done at a later date. Another vehicle taking great strides at the moment is the compressor wagon, this vehicle will provide an independent air brake system for our larger man riders and for works trains. Another of our smaller passenger carrying vehicles "MANRIDER 102" has had a significant amount of new metal welded in and a full repaint done ready for Easter.

With Easter fast approaching the countdown is on!

In the Motive Power Department work continued on Hibberd 4008, first removing the fuel pump for transport to Key Diesels at Burton Upon Trent for refurbishment, then it was hauled outside and onto the traverser for the brake rigging to be marked up ready for altering, finally ending up fitting a fuel filter to the newly installed tank and then a general tidy up of parts.

In the Rolling Stock Department Manrider 102 receives remedial work removing and replacing corroded tubing sections before its cosmetic restoration starts. Another piece of stock that was shunted out today is the MetroBug in order for its modification to start.

The Permanent Way Team tackled the line into the container at the back of the Engine Shed, moving the track across in order to allow some of our wider items of rolling stock and locomotives to be stored in there.

To continue with another week of progress at Steeple Grange.

Permanent Way were in action last Thursday doing the tedious but vital job of clearing the line of leaves which accumulate and make the track conditions treacherous. Thursday also saw the picking up of Greenbat's motor for transport to Dorlec in Chesterfield who will refurbish the motor ready for the 2015 operational season.

Sunday saw the Motive Power Department back in action on Hibberd 4008, manufacturing more parts for the cab, this time to cover up the Gearbox which protrudes into the cabin area and also measuring up the brake rigging ready for turning down from 2 foot gauge to 18 inch gauge. Greenbat was also having work completed on it this time the re-installation of the compressor which was removed for maintenance whilst the motor and gearboxes were out of the way at Dorlec. ZM32 received an overview by a potential lead to getting back on the mend as well.

In other news, work on Hibberd 4008 can also be reported as the cab's wooden interior starts to be manufactured and installed, alongside work on the engine in the shape of a new larger fuel tank which will allow for a much longer endurance needed at Steeple Grange.

Excellent progress in only the start of what will surely be a challenging year!
The weekend dawned cold and frosty and in sparkling sunshine the Santa Express propelled even more happy visitors up to the Grotto to see Father Christmas than last year. The Sunday was not quite as sunny but just as many people came to see him. Many were SGLR regulars but more were first time visitors to our Christmas activities. Suffice to say we should have even more repeat trade next time and the proceeds of it all are going to be greatly needed in the near future.
A rather steady week at SGLR, here's a round up of what has been going on!

In house at Steeple Grange our rear screen which will allow us to decorate the Engine House has been erected, the team today then cracked on with getting the Engine House decorated and ready to accept the Santa Special goers next weekend!

On the Permanent Way front packing and tamping of track between Steeplehouse and Killers Dale Halt has been undertaken to allow for a much smoother ride for our passengers over this festive weekend. Also measuring of the trackbed beyond Sandy Lane Crossing in order to progress our Push to Middleton Project.

Motive Power Department was slightly down on the team today, never the less jobs were completed on Hibberd 4008, draining and re-filling the water system with antifreeze ready for the Winter. ZM32 was also taken out on test despite suffering a flat battery which was sorted effectively and efficiently!

The Countdown really is on as we're into our final week before Santa's arrival, don't forget to come and join us!
As Santa is only two weeks away from landing at Steeple Grange much of the tasks have been once again focused on readying for his arrival, however there has been other things happening to the side.

In the Motive Power Department, Thursday saw a very prominant day, an assessment on Greenbat from Chesterfield based electrical engineers Dorlec, the view is after Christmas is to have Greenbat stripped back down and the traction motor and gearboxes sent away for deep cleaning to try and source a long lost problem. On Sunday another shunt took place to move Hibberd 4008 out of the shed to allow for decorations to put up, alongside the testing of battery electric Greenbat, which performed despite its motor problem flawlessly.

On a Permanent Way front, the team fixed the benches to the Branchline platform which has over the past week had a fair amount of alteration, with our small mining tub also being moved onto the end of the platform. Another part of the team over the course of this weekend has made a valiant effort to clear leaves above Porter Lane Tunnel and around the Killers Dale Halt area where Santa's Grotto will be situated - every little helps!

Don't forget, Santa Specials only two weeks to go, December 13th and 14th!
Another week swiftly passes us by, with much more work done, mostly related to Santa Specials!

The Motive Power Department tasked themselves with shunting the Carriage and Wagon Shed in preparation for Santa Specials, moving lesser used vehicles to the rear and the Santa Wagons and Carraiges to the front in readiness for the weekend - Don't forget! A paintbrush was also deployed on Hibberd 4008 in the regions of the gearbox.

The Permanent Way Department also was in action, checking and packing the branch line before Santa, and also at the top end of our line near Sandy Lane Crossing, moving a very generous load of spoil for the embankment, also laying another panel to allow filling further along our trackbed.

Never a dull moment here at Steeple Grange!
Apologies for the lack of reports over the summer, our IT department has been struggling some what! Here's a round up of what has been happening since the end of our running season a couple of weeks ago.

In the Motive Power Department the big news story is that after 12 months of hard restoration Hibberd 4008 took its first steps under its own power up the steeply graded 1 in 27 incline to Middleton, now the team turns to stopping the locomotive - a huge success for the team! Recently back in service L16 PEGGY has seen regular action along with PETER on Permanent Way Jobs.

In the Permanent Way Department much has been happening. The rear point onto the mainline at Steeplehouse has had work carried out on it to remove a large dip in the middle of the pointwork making it uncomfortable for passengers, this has now been fixed and is much smoother. Recently they have turned their attention to the branch line platform at Steeplehouse, extending it by a further locomotive length.

Until next week, where we continue with endeavours to prepare for Santa!
Another week passes at Steeple Grange and a rather cold snap
is being experienced.

Thursday saw the Permanent Way team inspecting and seeing to
various parts of the track work along the mainline to Middleton. Also the point
levers along the line which haven’t been protected against the weather were all
given a coat of red oxide.

Today saw the vegetation clearance team in action clearing
much vegetation at Steeplehouse and along the first parts of the mainline.
Motive Power were back in action with a view and succession of getting Hibberd
4008 running in order to put a volume of injector cleaner through it. Other
work being completed today was the painting of various items for L16 Peggy.

A rather quiet week with a very swift turn in the weather
from last weekend, hopefully next week will perk up slightly!
